How much to charge as professional organizer is a question that I have been asked countless times. And I don’t have a solid answer.
To determine what to charge, there are many factors that go into the process.
You have to find what you are comfortable with and what your market will pay. What are you willing to settle as your salary? What about paying for a team.
There are many things to think about. So I am breaking down how you can decide what to charge as a professional organizer.
Where Am I At In My Organizing Business?
This is the first question you need to ask yourself when you are deciding on pricing. Because if you have been a professional organizer for a while, your prices should be higher than those who are starting out.
Because when you have been doing a job for longer, you get paid for your experience. Since I was a teacher I will use that as an example.
New teachers get paid less than teachers who have been teaching for longer. And teachers get paid more for more trainings and specializations they have acquired. So you can charge the same.
Each year you have been running your organizing business, you can increase pricing.
What Are Other Organizers Charging In My Area?
This question is where you should look at your market and see what other organizers in your area are charging and how much experience do they have.
This will give you an idea of what your clientele will pay. You never want to price yourself out of your market. That means that no one will pay for your services.
So looking at what others are charging will help you figure out your price-point for your business.
How Quickly Can I Complete A Job?
I like throwing this into the questions because when I first started organizing, a project would take me longer. So I charged less. But as I got quicker with projects, I needed to charge more because my time on projects was decreasing.
Look at how long projects take and use that into how much you can charge if you are charging by hour.
What Pricing Do I Feel Comfortable Charging?
Another question to ask yourself is how much you feel confident charging clients. Because you have to be firm about your pricing, you need to feel confident in what you are charging.
I have a story. When I first started, I thought I had to charge next to nothing. So I was charging $25/hour for weekly tidying jobs. I thought this was a great business model because I would get repeat customers. And it was great…at first.
But as I got quicker, I realized I was doing more organizing than tidying. See, tidying was just straightening up spaces. But it was turning into bigger projects and I was worried about charging more. So I increased prices because I couldn’t keep up.
And it was the best decision I made for myself and my business.
But I had to be confident in raising my prices because I had to trust that I knew what I was doing. Which I did. And you do too!
Pricing Organizing Business Ideas
Now there are a few ways in which you can charge for your organizing business. Again you have to look at your market and what you are comfortable with. But these ideas can help you get started.
Pricing By Hour
When I first started organizing, I was pricing my services by the hour. I found this to be really helpful in keeping myself accountable. And I didn’t feel guilty for how long things took because I was charging hourly. I found my clients were comfortable with this pricing model so I kept it.
Each year I would increase my hourly rate since I had another year of experience.
Like I shared earlier, I was charging for a weekly tidy service in addition to my organizing services. For my organizing services, I started at $35/hour. I made a big jump after almost 2 years at this price-point. Then I charged $50/hour. Eventually I increased to $75/hour. And I finally landed on $150/hour for my time.
Pricing By Project
Another option for pricing your organizing business is to create pricing for projects. This is where you have a flat fee for how much a project is going to cost. I have seen organizers create toy organizing packages. Or set up pricing based on a specific room.
This is something you will have to test in your market. One of my organizing friends created packages for her clients and they loved it. Then she moved and kept the same pricing model. The new town she moved to did not like her package pricing options, so she changed it to hourly. So know your market before spending time on packages.
